Professor Satyabrata Rout, from the Department of Theatre Arts, Sarojini Naidu School, University of Hyderabad, has been awarded Doctor of Letters (D.Litt.) from the Khairagarh University (Indira Kala Sangeet Vishwavidyalaya) based on his research on “Dialectics of New Direction Theories: A critical Study”. The research deals with the methods adopted by contemporary Indian Theatre directors, those who are experimenting on new concepts and ideology in the Twenty first Century.
Prof. Rout has tried to theorise methods of Important Indian theatre practitioners such as: Ratan Thiyam, Prabir Guha, Prof. D.R Ankur, Dr. Anuradha Kapur, Robin Das, Bansi Kaul, Bapi Bose and Prof. Abhilash Pillai, and himself, etc. The research also puts light on Theatre practices through a comparative study of the academic institutions vs. group theatres. The research took six (6) long years to be realised through field interactions and interviews with practitioners.
Prof. Rout is the first National School of Drama alumnus to acquire this highest educational degree: ‘D. Litt.’ in Theatre Studies through an academic research programme. He is a recipient of Central Sangeet Natak Akademi award in the field of play direction and also a Fulbright fellow deputed to Central Michigan University in 2018-19.
