• The Indian Academy of Science (IASc) is organizing its 85th Annual Meeting in collaboration with the University of Hyderabad.
• The meeting will see the participation of 200 plus academicians – including researchers, teachers and students.
• Two-and-half day scientific forum comprising lectures by Fellows/Associates of the Academy over a wide range of scientific topics.
• 34 renowned speakers.
• Two public lectures (open to all) – 1) Indian Dance: Science of the Art by Smt. Sonal Mansingh 2) What Does the Constitution Really Mean by Justice J. Chelameswar.
• Two special lectures on topics of contemporary interest – 1) Science and Technology in India, in the Anthropocene by Prof. K VijayRaghavan 2) Artificial Intelligence: Hype and Substance by Prof. Manindra Agrawal
• Two high-level scientific symposia: Plant Pathogen Interactions and E C G Sudarshan: Physics, Person and Times
• Allied events: quizzes, elocution competitions, and lectures organized by the Academy Trust and exhibition of Academy’s publications (books and journals).
Founded in 1934 by Sir C V Raman, the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore is a registered Society with the main objective of promoting the progress and upholding the cause of science. Functioning under the aegis of DST, Ministry of Science &Technology, the Academy since its inception has been ceaselessly striving to uphold the spirit of science and education in the country. The Academy through its diverse activities aims to facilitate scientific exchange among researchers and highlight novel findings both within the scientific community and the larger public. The Mid-year meeting organized during July and the Annual meeting organized during November, are the two major annual events of the Academy in this context. The events every year see enthusiastic participation of the Fellowship of the Academy along with researchers, teachers, students and other invitees across the nation.
Opening new vistas towards bringing together researchers, academicians and young students on a common platform, curtains will rise on the 85th Annual Meeting of the Indian Academy of Sciences on 08 November 2019, 9.00 am at the DST Auditorium, University of Hyderabad. The two and a half-day deliberation expects to see the enthusiastic participation of members of the scientific and teaching community across the nation. The major highlight of the 85th Annual Meeting is the inaugural lectures by the newly elected Fellows and Associates of the Indian Academy of Sciences.
These two and a half days will comprise intense scientific sessions as the 85th Annual Meeting of the Academy serves as a platform for deliberations on scientific topics of varied interest while reviewing the organization’s present policies and activities and charting the future course. 08 November 2019 – The events of the first day of 85th Annual Meeting of the Academy will span five sessions covering various aspects of science and technology, starting with the Presidential Address by Prof. Partha P. Majumder on ‘In Search of the Drivers’. The sessions have been designed around the spirit of interdisciplinarity that the meetings of the Academy constantly strive to.
The first day of the meeting comprise a symposium on Plant-Pathogen Interactions during which five renowned researchers will share their research on the subject and engage in interaction with the audience.
The first day of the meeting concludes with a public lecture on `Indian Dance: Science of the Art’ by Padma Vibhushan Smt. Sonal Mansingh, followed by a cultural performance by Kamakhya Kalapeeth, CICD Repertory Group, New Delhi.
09 November 2019 – The second day of the event spanning five sessions will start with a special lecture on ` Science and Technology in India, in the Anthropocene’ by Padma Shri Prof. K VijayRaghavan. In the times when the topic of judicial use of technologies, scientific funding and need of science communication have triggered intense debate, the talk will help us look at the issue in retrospect and chart future course of action.
Besides the scientific lectures by the Fellows/Associates of the Academy, the day will see a special symposium on ‘E C G Sudarshan: Physics, Person and Times’, wherein, seven prominent researchers will share their experiences and reminisce the life and work of renowned researcher Prof. E C G Sudarshan.
The second day of the meeting will end with a public lecture by Justice J. Chelameswar on ` What Does the Constitution Really Mean’.
10 November 2019 – The last leg of the event spanning 3 sessions will majorly cover the scientific lectures by the Fellows/Associates of the Academy. Highlighting the current buzz around artificial intelligence and machine learning, the meeting will conclude with a special lecture on ` Artificial Intelligence: Hype and Substance by Manindra Agrawal.
Some of the scientific lectures such as GM crops, biogeochemistry of Bay of Bengal and therapeutic production of proteins in milk are likely to be of common interest.
[Allied Events] – As a part of the 85th Annual Meeting of the Academy, The Academy Trust (tAcT) will oragnize allied events including quizzes, elocution competitions, and lectures organized by the Academy Trust and exhibition of Academy’s publications (books and journals).
